Guide
Chemical & product carriers
How product carriers differ from crude tankers, and the Dasic equipment used on them.
Product carriers are more sophisticated than crude oil tankers because they carry different types of cargo. Dedicated product carriers have coated cargo tanks that are easy to drain and clean and that protect the cargo from contamination.
They tend to be smaller than crude tankers and are mainly used in short-haul, intra-regional product trades, where their size and flexibility allow higher utilisation. Larger Panamax and Aframax product tankers are increasingly used on long-haul routes from the Middle East to take advantage of economies of scale.
| Class | Deadweight (DWT) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Handysize | 10,000–30,000 | Small tankers mainly carrying finished petroleum products |
| Handymax | 30,001–50,000 | A larger version of Handysize, popular for product carriers |
| Panamax | 50,001–80,000 | The largest ships able to pass through the Panama Canal locks |
| Capesize | 80,001–199,000 | Too large for the Panama or Suez locks, so travel via the Cape of Good Hope or Cape Horn |
Dasic equipment for product carriers
- Portable tank washing: D3000, D4000, Orbitor
- Fixed installation: Orbitor, D3000, D4000
- Gas freeing fans: Jetfan 70, Jetfan 65
- Anti-piracy water cannon: Nemesis 5000
Chemical tankers often wait for cargo tanks to dry after cleaning. Jetfan 65 fans with hoses and flexible ducting have halved that drying time on Stena’s chemical tanker fleet.
