Bulk carriers
Bulk carrier classes and the Dasic equipment used on board.
A bulk carrier is a merchant ship designed to transport unpackaged bulk cargo such as grain, coal, ore and cement. They are built to maximise capacity, safety and efficiency and to withstand the rigours of their work.
Bulk carriers make up the largest share of the world’s merchant fleet and range from single-hold mini-bulkers to giant ore carriers. Some can unload their own cargo, some depend on port facilities and some even package the cargo as it is loaded.
| Class | Deadweight (DWT) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Handysize | 10,000–30,000 | Small bulk carriers making up most of the short-haul fleet |
| Handymax | 30,001–50,000 | A larger version of Handysize, popular for bulk and crude |
| Panamax | 50,001–80,000 | The largest ships able to pass through the Panama Canal locks |
| Capesize | 80,001–199,000 | Too large for the Panama or Suez locks |
